SOMA is a sci-fi horror from the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It released in 2006 and has attained the steam rating of 95% recommended from over 9000 reviews (no, that’s not a meme, it has 9400 reviews). It is one of the highest rated horror games of all time, but it’s also a genuinely good sci-fi story. If it’s not in your collection already, the question is, why?
At £5.74 this is a historical low for this title. For the purposes of this article, historical low means this matches the previous cheapest the game has been on sale as an individual title, but does not include bundle prices or key resellers.
£29.99 £22.49 25% off
Prey (2017) is an immersive sci-fi action game that has a deep, authentic atmosphere which will keep you on the edge for the entire game. It doesn’t help that one of the enemies can morph into anything else and the game is filled with lootables. When you approach an innocent coffee cup and it morphs into a space alien trying to chew your face off… well let’s just say I made some really odd noises and I’m glad no one watched me play this game. The story is engaging and the gameplay solid.
It is a fairly new release, releasing in May 2017 and has over 5,600 reviews at 88% positive. It’s only 25% off this sale, which does not make it a historical low (it has previously been £17.99 on a third party website) but it is the current lowest price.
£39.99 £19.99 50% off
Resident EVII is the latest installment of the Resident Evil series. It has some changes and innovations from the previous games which had begun flagging in popularity, to create a well-received first person psychological horror. It’s become a hit with the fans, gathering almost 8,000 reviews since it released in January 2017, with an very positive score of 90% recommended.
The game is available at 50% off for £19.99, which is a historical low.
£14.99 £3.74 75% off
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines released in 2004, and if you’re a young-un I’ll forgive you for having passed this by. The graphics are great for a 13 year old game, but where this game really excels is the detail and depth of the game as an RPG and first person action game. It’s a gritty and dark tale of a world containing modern vampires with a ridiculous amount of choice and options. Your game will be genuinely different each playthrough and to the playthroughs of others – and that’s something that modern games often don’t have anymore. Whilst not a horror game, it definitely nails the atmosphere.
It’s not a historical lowest, but pretty close as the lowest ever price was £3.59, so pretty close.
£18.99 £7.59 60% off
Darkest Dungeon is a dark fantasy RPG roguelike with turn based combat. You’ll need to train your heroes and try to strategise the best way to survive gruesome enemies, unimaginable horrors, stress, famine and disease, all whilst the dark sets in behind you. This game can be brutally tough, and for those not used to the level of difficulty it may be worth starting on the easiest setting. For those who really want to be challenged – this game offers some heroic levels of difficulty.
It released in 2016 and has racked up 25,000 reviews with an 85% positive rating. It’s 10p more than the historical low right now, so offers pretty good value.
£6.99 £5.59 20% off
This unique lovecraftian simulation game has you playing the high priest of a village, worshipping a dark God who can destroy the world. You have to sacrifice the right people every season, keep the village happy the inside and ensure that the demons don’t destroy you from the outside. It’s a management game that is quite a unique niche, so won’t appeal to everyone and potentially can be completed within a few hours.
The Shrouded Isle released in August 2017, so only has a discount of 20%. This is a historical low, and you can read my WGN review to see why I recommend it personally.
£14.99 £7.49 50% off
From Playdead, the creators of Limbo, comes Inside – an atmospheric twisted puzzle story about a boy who must journey through the dark and try to escape the mad clutches of a dark project. Inside was critically acclaimed immediately upon release, and has managed to gather an impressive 12,000 reviews for a 95% positive score, making it one of the highest rated puzzle games on Steam.
50% off is the historical low for this game.
£10.99 £2.19 80% off
This isn’t a horror game, on the contrary, it’s rather cute despite the dark setting of trying to escape a cave whilst monsters come at you from every direction, but at £2.19 , I think it deserves a special mention here. This is a clever rhythm / movement game that requires you to learn patterns and move to the beat in order to survive and plunder. It’s a roguelike, with a ton of replayability that’s guaranteed to have you bopping your head in happiness or screaming at your screen in frustration, with nothing in between.
This is a historical low price for this game, and for £2 you’re really not going to get much better.
£14.99 £7.49 50% off
The Evil Within didn’t smash the reviews, with a 72% positive over 5000, but it does still remain a highly recommended psychological / survival horror game. Created by Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil series) and released in 2004, it is designed to up your levels of anxiety and leave you genuinely scared as you play a Detective trapped in a horrific, evil dimension.
It’s only 50% off and this isn’t the cheapest it’s been, but I think it’s still worth a recommendation. If you do decide to get it, there is a Bundle that includes the three available DLC for £8.99, and I do think this is worth the extra £1.50, value wise.
£29.99 £8.99 70% off
For those who enjoy the Alien franchise, this game finally nails the atmosphere of sci-fi horror and dread. This is set fifteen years after the events of Alien, and we follow Ripley’s daughter Amanda as she tries to discover what happened to her mother. It has a 91% positive review score and over 14,000 reviews.
It has been cheaper, so if you’re not going to play it right now it might be adding this to your wish list and waiting. It has been as low as £5.67 in the past. You could also just enter our competition below…
The next Steam Sale has already been leaked, and will be for Black Friday running from November 22nd to November 28th, check back here for a post full of recommendations then!
