Skynet Wales are a group of people dedicated to hosting a 100+ person gaming LAN event at least twice a year spanning a Summer and Winter event. As there isn’t anything else that compares to this scale outside of university based gaming events in Wales, this will be the biggest gaming event in the country this Winter which the public can join in on.
The Winter event this year is being held on the 22nd to the 24th of November at Theater Brycheiniog, Canal Wharf, Brecon, Powys, LD3 7EW and this is a last minute warning that tickets are only available to purchase until midnight this Sunday 17th of November. The LAN takes place on the stage of the main auditorium and includes all the expected necessities including a function/meeting room, restaurant and bar and for accommodation there is a dedicated sleeping area (so bring a sleeping bag) as well as toilets and shower facilities. There are also supermarkets and take-away restaurants within walking distance but they do host a huge pizza party on the Saturday evening.
During the LAN event you can expect a variety of tournaments, teams travel from across the world to take part, the CS:GO tournament is especially a big hit. Currently you can sign up for Left 4 Dead 2 (2v2), Rocket League (3v3) and a mystery solo game. If you don’t have a team you can still sign up and be assigned new friends for the tournaments. There will also be a Pub Quiz on Friday evening and a Quake tournament is to be held as part of Skynet Wales’ traditions.
According to the FAQ on their website, if you are partaking in the LAN you must bring (and this is a direct quote):
- Your PC Your monitor
- Keyboard, mouse and headset. NOTE : Speakers will not be allowed
- A surge protected extension bar (approx 4 way)
- Spare power lead.
- Roll mat of camp bed
- Sleeping Bag
- Knife Spoon and Fork
- A drinking utensil (a mug)
- Money for food and snacks
- A towel
- DEODORANT – Smellies etc
Alternatively you do not need to bring a PC if you are only spectating, as you can purchase a Spectator Ticket. There will be parking available on site which will cost £4.50 for the entire weekend or £3.00 per day.
A lot of Welsh Gaming Network members attend these events, and I always receive positive feedback from them. This is a great opportunity to meet like minded local people, and possibly make new gaming friends for life as everyone attending will be there for their love of video games.
