The PlayStation One (PS1) has a ton of fantastic games. At the end of it’s production run the number of games available to play on the system was around 1300! With so many great games available, it’s no wonder that the PS1 went on to sell over 100 million units worldwide. The PS1 was discontinued on March 23rd 2006, over ten years after it’s launch. Ten years is a long time now-a-days, with each generation of current gen consoles lasting around four to five years.
I’ve personally played all of the games on this list and they all fit the bill for being the very best the PS1 had to offer.
At the time, the processing power of PlayStation One was cutting edge and some of the games on this list (Spoiler: Final Fantasy VII) pushed the graphics chip to the absolute limit! I think the reasons why most of these games became fan or cult classics was down to two things. The developers and most important the hardware. The PS1 will always have a place on my list of the best consoles ever.
The Best Role Playing Games for the PS1
In this article, we’re looking at the best RPG’s for the PS1. It was a difficult job reducing my original list down, at one point I had over 30 games on it! I finally managed to get it down to a respectable list of 5 games. Let’s get to it.
Breath of Fire IV
First up is this brilliant RPG. It was developed by arcade and fighter game specialists Capcom. Breath of Fire IV is the fourth game in the series. Originally it was released for the PS1 in Japan and North America in 2000. It came to Europe in 2001. The game was later released on PC when it was ported over in 2003.
It’s got rave reviews and is a pleasure to play. It’s your run of the mill RPG, sporting the classic RPG nuances. Magic, armor, and experience points. You’ll also encounter many a random enemy encounter. If you go on to play this game, you’ll also see that it does encounter dragons, which is one of the major plot themes. Although, going by the title of the game you may have already guessed that.
Final Fantasy VII
It’s just a guess, but if we didn’t include Final Fantasy VII on this list you’d be extremely shocked! It’s almost a given that it’d be included. FF7 is a 1997 role-playing game developed by Square. The seventh installment in the Final Fantasy franchise is a real fan favourite that carries all of the usual FF hallmarks. Magic, mystery and a fantastic battle system.
When you think of RGP’s or Japanese RPGs for that matter the first game that should spring to mind and it does for me, is FF7. A true classic in it’s genre and it might be a bold statement but there are arguments for it being considered the best game ever!
Initial release date: 31 January 1997
Tales of Eternia
Tales of Eternia, another RPG published by Namco. It’s the third title in the tales series. The game is a perfect game for the PS1. It isn’t too heavy in terms of load times as they are almost non-existent. Tales of Eternia has lots to like about it. Perhaps the most likeable elements of the game are the story line, characters and production value. They are all second to none.
It was also called Tales of Destiny II so if you can’t find Tales of Eternia, look for the alternate name.
Initial release date: 30 November 2000
Final Fantasy IX
Another entry for a Final Fantasy game on this list. Final Fantasy IX is an RPG developed by Square for the PlayStation game console. It’s the ninth game in the Final Fantasy line-up and the last to be launched on the original PlayStation. After playing FF7 and FF8 I wasn’t sure they could squeeze any further graphical improvements out of the PS1’s graphics chip but they have. It’s a really beautiful game and the cutscenes are epic.
Initial release date: 7 July 2000
Vanguard Bandits, this tactical role-playing game for the PlayStation is a game of sheer fun and enjoyment. Take control of huge robots, team up and fight against an evil old empire. There are lots of alliances and nationalities in the game. It also has over 30 playable characters making it a game of epic proportions. It was originally developed by Human Entertainment.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and Human Entertainment sadly folded and declared bankruptcy in 2000.
Initial release date: 30 July 1998
If you want to reminisce and revisit some of these classic Role Playing Games on the Playstation one, most can be found still available today! Not new of course, they have all long been discontinued.
You can pick most of them up from second hand gaming stores such as CEX or GAME for a couple of pounds / dollars. If you can’t find them at those stores, EBAY will be the next best place. Be careful not to pay over the odds though as they are all fairly cheap still.
You’d be surprised that there are some PS1 games that are so rare they can cost several hundred pounds / dollars. If you have a bit of cash burning a hole in your pocket check them out.
